This will be known as the summer with out bluefish. Hopefully this will not be the common trend in the years to come. The bluefish did not show up in numbers, finning in deep water like they normally do all summer. There were a few instances where I found them but there were not very many and they were not interested in eating. There is currently no shortage of small bait (micro bait, and peanut bunker) locally. The snappers are hot on their tails almost anywhere you go in the islands. The sea bass and porgy fishing has been good around the islands in shallow water. I like to fish for them with a jig head and gulp or just a deadly dick snap jigged off the bottom. I find this to be more fun and convenient than using bait.
There have been a lot of Bonito in RI/MASS and even Eastern CT. I hope they filter in in the upcoming weeks, but the chances are not likely that they make it this far west in great numbers. Hopefully after a few big Easterly blows we will be blessed with False Albacore in our local waters by September 15th (about). Last year the Albie bite was very inconsistent for me, hot one day, ice cold the next. Lets see what this year brings.
I did enjoy fishing on my father in laws boat on the south shore of LI. We came across small mahi feeding on small bait afew miles out and casted lures to them. We also had good bottom fishing.
